Sound cuts out

I have a problem with sound files in a PowerPoint 2003 presentation.
This was the first .ppt created by my daughter - I am trying to help her fix
this, but my PP knowledge is limited.

Speech was recorded as .wav files on a separate device and linked to the
..ppt.
The PP consists of about 20 slides, most of which have a brief speech
commentary (an individual wav file for each slide). Actual durations of files
range from about 2 to 20 seconds.

When first created, all sound files played properly when the presentation
was run. We now have a problem with some of the sound files. They only play
the first four seconds, then cut off.
As stated, it only occurs with certain files. Some files of 18 seconds
duration play OK. But if I take one example with an actual duration of about
eight seconds, it cuts out after four (and if I right-click the loudspeaker
icon and go to ‘Edit Sound Object’, the Sound options display shows ‘Total
playing time: 00:04’).

The files are all set to start ‘After Previous’. (I have checked that the
Sound Action is set to ‘Play’, not ‘Pause’ or ‘Stop’). There are no delays
set in the sound timings.
Each slide is set to advance both automatically and on click. We have
checked that the slide advance timings are much longer than the actual sound
file durations.

If we double-click the loudspeaker icon in the slide, the complete sound
file plays. If we run the presentation, or click the ‘Play’ button in the
Custom Animation pane, we only get the first four seconds.

Initially the PP was linked to the .wav files on the local computer.
Subsequently the links were removed, and the files embedded as per
instructions on this site. The problem seems to have arisen after this action.

We have also tried creating a new presentation using some of the same .wav
files (taking a couple of ‘existing good’ examples which worked OK), and some
new .wav files (freshly recorded, using the same device as before). These
files are embedded. The ‘existing good’ examples work OK in the new PP. The
new recording show the same problem of cut-out after four seconds.

All suggestions greatly appreciated!

Here's what I do:

Add a rectangle to the side or bottom of the screen area (so it can't be
seen when in Slide Show View). Set an Emphasis Custom Animation to Change
Fill Color (you can use any object or animation). Set the timing for this
animation to occur at the end of the audio.

Set slide transition timing to advance after 0.

Hi Sandy, many thanks for your suggestion. I haven’t got this to work yet -
I’m probably misunderstanding something. Here’s what I tried, step by step:

“Add a rectangle to the side or bottom of the screen area (so it can't be
seen when in Slide Show View).†- I went to Slide Show - Action Buttons -
selected the blank rectangular button - inserted it next to the slide.

“Set an Emphasis Custom Animation to Change Fill Color (you can use any
object or animation).†- I right-clicked the Action Button - Custom Animation
- Change Fill Colour - Add Effect - Emphasis - Start ‘After Previous’.

“Set the timing for this animation to occur at the end of the audio†- I
double-clicked the Action button - “Change Fill†box opened - went to Timing
tab - tried changing Delay to 10 seconds (then re-set it to 0 when this
didn’t work).

“Set slide transition timing to advance after 0†- I changed Advance Slide
settings as follows - unchecked ‘on mouse click’ (leaving “automatically
after†checked, but re-set to 0 seconds).

Can you see any errors in the above?

Thanks
Peter

As you have said so many questions. maybe is just concerned to two key
points,, they are :

1> you shoud ste up the timing of your powerpoint presentation

How to Timing Automatic PowerPoint Presentations?

2> You want the music file which you just insert played automatically
First, download the song(s) in mp3 or WAV format that can be accepted
by power point.

As you have PowerPoint 2003:
1>insert the music file:
click the sound icon to display the Options tab. Click on the tab,
and set Play across slides for Play Sound.
2>Set up the effect of the sound:
1.right click on the icon in your presentation and select "Custom
Animation."
2. There will be a section for "Effect" with the option to stop
playing after X slides.
3. Set the number of slides for the sound to play here. Now when you
select OK and exit the custom animation box, your sound will continue
to play.

Hi Ciciamy, thanks for your advice.
I have looked at both the tutorials. Unfortunately, they do not help me.
Perhaps you have misunderstood my problem. I am not trying to play music
across several slides. I have about 20 speech files (in .wav format). Each is
embedded individually to a different slide. But some slides only play the
first few seconds of the wav file.
Any other ideas welcomed!

she wants to.

You can convert ppt to dvd using Presentation to Video Converter and it's nice prog and really simple.
