Sound crackles every minute or so

I've read comments from other people having the same problem, which is that
any type of sound played on vista crackles or skip several beats every minute
or so. So far, I can't find anyone with a clear explanation to, or a solution
for the problem. Is there a savior in this forum that can help me? This is
what I've tried and found out so far.

* The problem occurs on both my eMachine T5212 and my Vaio TP1. Both are
running Home Basic. The eMachine has a Realtek AC'97 Audio driver and is
connected to a pair of cheap $20 speakers via the headphone jack. The Vaio
has an Intel HDMI Audio driver and is connected via HDMI to a Sharp Aquos.
This tells me the driver is not the problem (although I don't know a thing
about computers).

*The problem occurs regardless of which program I'm using. In my case, it
happens when I'm using WMA, Real, iTunes, InterVideo (when I try to watch
DVDs) and SonicStage. The sound even crackles when the Microsoft logo appears
and the startup tune is playing.

*In the case of my Vaio, I've deleted and reinstalled the Intel HDMI driver
but this hasn't worked. I downloaded the latest HDMI driver (as of 9/07) from
intel.com and installed it, but this also hasn't worked. When I called Sony,
they told me to do a total recovery. But this obviously won't help my
eMachine.

*One thing I am suspicious of is Office Home and Student 2007. I think the
problem started on both my PCs after I installed Office, but I can't be sure.
Maybe paranoia on my part.

Anyone out there with any helpful ideas?

Make sure you have the latest Realtek/Intel drivers installed. Mine started
doing something similar to this and when I looked I found that Windows had
decided to revert to the generic Microsoft drivers.

There are several potential remedies listed on this site. For me removing my
wireless adaptor from the USB port seems to have removed the problem. I don't
understand why this works. I'm hoping an internal wireless card will allow me
to have good sound while I'm connected.

Like I wrote in the original post, I went to intel.com (actually yesterday)
and downloaded/installed the latest HDMI Audio driver (version 6.10.0.2035
released 6/6/07). I checked device manager a second ago and it hasn't
reverted. A Realtek driver won't control HDMI output from a Vaio TP1 anyway.
But I doubt this has anything to do with it because the sound skipping
happens on two completely different PCs.

The Vaio TP1 is built with an internal wireless card (LAN Express AS IEEE
802.11g PCI-E adaptor). My eMachine is hooked up to a Buffalo 802.11n
Wireless Adaptor. But they still both have the same problem.
