When I insert a sound clip into a Powerpoint presentation a default icon is
displayed (showing a speaker)? Is there a way of changing this icon?

You have several options. You can drag it off the slide so that it never shows.
You can link an object (that looks like an icon) to a sound file (must be a WAV)
or you can cover the icon with something else to hide it.

Yes and no. I think that you will always get the speaker icon when you
insert a sound. However, if the sound you insert is a WAV and you insert
it so that it is embedded (not linked), you can delete the sound icon and
then set the Action Settings of any object (picture, drawn shape, etc.)
to play the sound. Let us know if you need more details on any of this,
or if this isn't what you want.

Thanks. Your second suggestion solves my problem (well, actually, it solves
my *student's* problem and I'll sound as if I know more about Powerpoint
than I really do). Many thanks.

Thanks, that's exactly what I needed.
