You cannot do that! You can disconnect the internal
speakers by pulling the wires off their posts and your
external speakers will work fine. The "Internal sound
chip" (?) only activates the beep you hear when you boot.

Jake is obviously mistaken!
To disable the on-board sound, you need to enter the BIOS. You must do this
when your computer first boots up. The most common way to enter the BIOS is the
DEL key. The actual key may be displayed for a brief moment when you boot up.
It will say something like "Press DEL to enter setup". Once you are in the BIOS
you will have to nose around until you find it, and set on-board sound to
"disabled". The best thing to do is to search the web for instructions if you
have never worked in the BIOS before.

What kind of a response is, "You'll have to nose around
until you find it". That's not a helpful response to a
post and a person that probably doesn't know what "BIOS"
means. Simply put, disconnect at the internal speakers.
You want a novice tinkering with the BIOS, that could be
a disaster in the making.

That's why I said they should search for instructions on the web.
