I have a sound card that is built into my motherboard.
All drivers have been installed, deleted and reinstalled
several times through Device Manager. Device Manager
displays working drivers when they are reinstalled. In
BIOS, the sound card is enabled. However, when ANY type of
music is attempting to play, I get an error message. This
message details that I do not have a sound card
installed. The manufacturer and the retailer in which I
bought the motherboard says it is a problem with Windows.

The easiest way to rectify this problem is to take the cd
that came with your motherboard and install it... other
wise another solution is to go to device manager take out
everything under sound shut down ur system and restart.. u
should be promted that new hard ware found insert the mobo
disk and it should search for drivers there

If you get the error message "no audio device" from control panel,
sounds, but it shows from hardware, devices, that the sound card is
installed, then this might help.

I spent hours trying to get the soundcard to work before I found these
two answers--I don't know if you need the direct X update or not.
thanks to those who posted the solutions!--Dusty

from Andy--
This probelm happens when the device manager says there is no problem
with the sound card drivers and that everything is working fine. But
in the control panel under sounds there exists no audio devices.

I searched a ton of newsgroups for the answer to this problem, i
didn't find any.

The problem can be fixed by updating to directX 9

Then you have to go to control panel/administrative tools/Services

once in there go down to the bottom right click on the windows audio
go to properties and make sure that the startup is set to automatic,
then start the service.

hope this helps someone out.

and from another post--
Q: My sound does not work. All drivers are installed
and the Device Manager
reports it is working properly. Why isn't it working?
A: The windows audio service needs to be enabled. To
enable it:
1>click Start, then Run, and type "services.msc"
(without quotes) and click
OK
2>find the "Windows Audio" service (without quotes),
right click and select
Properties, select
"Automatic" instead of "Disabled" (without quotes) in
the startup type box
3>Click Apply.
4>Click Start
5>Click OK.
