sound card problems

I can't seem to get my sound card to work. Basically, I can't get sound. When I try to play win amp, I get the following error:

Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in
configuration. Error code: 88780078

I've tried updating the drivers, re-installing directx 9, completely removing the sound card (which consisted of booting up in safe mode, removing the hardware from the hardware profile, removing the software using add/remove, manually deleting the remaining software files and then moving the sound card to a different slot) and updating windows XP. The only solutions that I haven't tried are using system restore (I don't have a save point before I started having this problem), using recovery console (I don't know how to use it properly) or re-installing windows (which I'm reluctant to do). One solution that I saw on the internet for this problem suggested manually deleting the drivers. I would do this, except I don't know exactly what the pertinent drivers are. I've also looked all over google to no avail.

Any ideas?

Hi

Try the web site for sound card and download/install the latest drivers that
are compatible with XP. Go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager.
Expand 'Sound, video and game controllers. Right click on your sound,
select Properties>Drive. Try 'Roll Back driver' - to see if that helps.

I've already tried both of these options. Creative labs (the manufacturer of my card)assures me that the problem is a windows problem. Incidentally, windows won't let me roll back the driver at all.

Given the nature of this problem and the solution paths that I have already tried, I'm convinced that I'm dealing with something for more complecated then a driver problem.

Hi

It is just WinAmp the sound card doesn't work with or all players? Do the
System sounds play through the sound card? 'File Types' are set OK in
WinAmp? Have you tried the WinAmp forums:

It's more then just win amp. In the sounds and audio devices control panel, it says that I have no audio device in the volume tab. Anything that the windows trouble shooter has suggested are things that I've already tried.

Sounds like (Sorry for the pun) you have tried several things, but, how
about this; Control Panel, Sounds Speech and Audio Devices, Sounds and Audio
devices, Audio tab, check Sound playback, and make sure dropdown has correct
item listed; also, in that tab, under Sound playback, click "Advanced", and
make sure your speaker selection is correct for your installed speakers; and
under "Volume" tab, Device Volume, Advanced, make sure "Mute" is not
checked. I am sorry, I know all this is simple stuff, but I just helped
someone the other day with the same symptoms, and this is where I found the
problem. Good Luck.

Unfortunately, I can't select an audio device from sound playback. Incidently, when I start up my machine in windows 95 mode (from another disk drive) the sound card installs perfectly. This must mean that my problem is purely a windows xp one.

Well... this seems to be a global problem...
It seems tha winamp is the bad issue here and for some reason thi
shuts down the Windows Audio entry in your startup services. Look a
your evenatlog and find out what's going wrong. Disable all thes
programs in your services and restart Windows Audio.
Sound lives again!!
