Fix your system clock !

Someone posting from Road Runner in NY should not be posting 24hrs in advance !

Thanx...
Dave

| Hi,
| I spent my entire weekend formatting then install win XP pro. I then
| downloaded SP1 and other patches. My sound system was working fine. Suddenly
| this morning when turning on my computer I noticed that I did not get any
| sound even the windows system sounds. But when checking my sounds and audio
| devices under control panel, I noticed there was no audio device set. I
| could not check nor uncheck anything. I went to check my hardware to see if
| my sound card was installed properly. Everything was fine. My sound card was
| installed. I uninstall it and from purchased CD resources reinstall the
| drivers. Reboot the computer and nothing seemed to change. When I put a
| music CD, WMP tells me that there is a problem with my sound device. I'm
| getting very frustrated with it. I spent more time getting windows to work
| than doing my work. Specially when the most unexpected of all happen. I do
| not understand. I have had this computer for about 2 years now and always
| run XP pro. I decided to reformat to gain speed and be viruses & worms free
| for a while. Over night I defrayment the computer under safe mode. Before
| it, everything was working properly. I have done everything I could think of
| to resolve the problem. I don't know another way to get the sound card
| working. I even check in the device manager if my Avance AC97 Audio was
| enabled.
| Can someone help, I really don't know what went wrong over a night? Really
| thinking of switching to Linux but would rather be with a familiar platform.

I don't see how fixing my system clock helps me fixing the problem with my
sound card! I unistall all windows patches and things have not improuved.
Need help?

You'll find few answers in this particular post, as most people resent when
not-so-clever posters jump to the beginning of the line by setting their
system clocks ahead.

And who gives a shit if you switch to Linux or not?

We sure don't care.

NO, I am not. I don't know what else to do beside buying another sound card.
I uninstall all windows patches without success. I even update my sound card
drivers.
I spent the entire day hoping to get it work. I even check my CMOS when it
was enable. I am running out of options. Does anyone have a fresh new idea?

Try a different sound card

Most of those coming to this newsgroups asking for help apologize for their
clock being off and quickly fix it. Here's hoping the speakers on your
computer never emit a sound again.

try removing the drivers from device manager,
shut down, remover the sound card, boot up a few times.
maybe even defragment. (give the pc something to do)
look at, and write down, what the system allocated to the attached devices
make sure none of the irqs are "reserved" oin the bios.

now put the card back in and see what happens

OK. I will try to remove my drivers and then remove my sound card. Hope that
this one make a difference. I am really running out of option. As suggested
I can always buy a new sound card but well if I don't understand what
happened, what on earth prevent it from happening again with the new sound
card? I will be more comfortable understanding the problem first. I went
through the entire Microsoft help center and most of the fix suggested were
not applicable or could not solve my problem. Hard to believe that it did
happen out of the blue. Just start my computer and has been really miserable
since.
Even though what has been suggested here did not help so far, I have to
thank the people whose advice were constructive. They made reading this
newsgroup a great experience worth doing. Thanks

The newest driver for the ac97 is garbage. This is one of the many problems
it has. The viaarena forum also has really good help with such issues, as a
lot of their chipsets include it.

Well, I just run to CompUSA and bought a new sound card from creative.
I was astonished when installed it did not work. Wow, I will try what
anonymous
suggests and follow the direction of via arena forum. If that does not work
I will
just reformat my hard drive and reinstall WinXP for the second time. Cross
my
fingers that it works because if it does not, I am scre??? If anyone has
great suggestion, please let me know. I've ran out. Try DirectX and still
don't see sound device.
