Sound card problem

Hi

I am running Windows XP Home and I had to format the computer due to
virus/worm that could not be removed otherwised.

When I installed Windows XP again everything seemed to be fine apart from
sound. When I tried to play tracks I got following message:


"There is no sound card
You either do not have a sound card installed on your computer or it is not
functioning properly. If you do not have a sound card installed, you must
install one before you can listen to audio in a digital media file. If you do
have a sound card installed, refer to its documentation to troubleshoot the
problem.

Error ID = 0x80040256, Remedy ID = 0x00000000 "

I opened Device Manager and I found that there's something wrong with
C-Media AC97 Audio Device. When I open it it says the following

"This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

Troubleshoot suggest that I uninstall and install the driver again but I am
not sure about that as I dont think that I have backup on CD.

Could anyone help me to solve this issue?

Re-installation of Windows using just the Windows XP cdrom
does not guarantee that all of the required drivers are also
re-installed. Typically, drivers for peripherals are on the
cdrom discs or floppy diskettes that accompany them. Look for
the one for the sound system. If the sound card is integrated
into the motherboard, the audio drivers is in an utility cdrom
for the motherboard.
 
I have the c-media AC97 which stopped working when I installed the MS
updated driver for it. Bottom line: don't trust the amateurs at MS!
 
Bottom line is NEVER update using the drivers the MANUFACTURERS provides
to Microsoft for general use. The system may downlevel your drivers and
you will lose funcionality provided by the system specific drivers you
already have.

This has always bee the case! Since Microsoft does not make the hardware the,
don't trust their drivers.

BTW: It is never recommended to "blindly" update each and every driver on any
PC. If you have a problem with the device, then update it.

Motto: If it ain't broken, don't fix it.
 
I have suddenly lost my audio for Windows XP. There was an automatic update
for Windows Media Player. Now my audio isn't working. I received this error
message: C00D11BA. I have tried System Restore, device manager, you name it.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I can't even access some games for my
daughter without audio.
