Sound card not compatible?

I had W2k installed on my computer, I had to format and
clean install XP. When I would log on normally, when the
start up jingle would try to start, the computer would
freeze. I can log-in in safe mode and normally if I
disable the sound devices. Is this a compatibility problem?
