Sound card dissappeared Error=80040256

I am getting an error message 80040256 telling me I
either do not have a sound card or it is not working
properly or it is being used by another device. How do I
find out...and more importantly...how do I fix it?

Load Device Manager and remove any Sound Card entries, then install
the correct driver from CD or from web.
