I have a common SoundBlaster card on a linux machine. For no apparent
reason, it died with a loud screech. My first thought was to buy a cheap
replacement on eBay. But I am wondering if it could be the speakers?

Any suggestions on troubleshooting,, preventing this from happening in the
future, or if it would be foolhardy to just purchase a new one would be
appreciated.

It could be a software problem,,,try reinstalling the card.

The speakers can easily be tested with an ohmmeter...
they should have low resistance...and just connecting them to an ohmmeter
should result in you hearing a faint "click"

BTW: if it turns out your card is in-fact bad...be sure to replace it with
one that
has known linux support
