the sound buttons on my keyboard don't work at all, and haven't for some
time, I'm wondering how I can get them turned back on because its easier to
skip to the next song or turn up the volume ect, with just pressing a button
on the keyboard thanks

Check your keyboard properties for the setting on this. There should be a option in there to toggle it on. Also in some cases either your keyboard can be defective or your computer does not support this option

The generic drivers in XP for multimedia keyboards will enable the volume
keys. However to get other keys to work - such as play controls (skip song)
- the drivers/software for the keyboard needs to be installed.

If software is installed, check the settings to find out what media player
is assigned to the "skip song" button. You may or may not be able to
reassign these keys to your preferred media player (it depends on what
players are supported by the software that you're using).

If the software is installed and not working, try reinstalling to repair
it.

If no software is installed or you're facing a repair, you should be able
to download the most recent version of keyboard software at the
manufacturer's website. While downloading, check the site for installation
directions for that package. Sometimes the newer version will install over
the old; other times, you need to uninstall the old before installing the
new.
