Sound but no image for some mpg's

I made mpg files of some old video footage in order to burn them on a DVD.
Those I made from old VHS tapes via my Medion TV-card will play as mpg in
WINPLAYER 9 or any other mediaplayer you can think of, but not in WINDOWS
MOVIE MAKER. There only the sound is working. Afterwards the program
freezes and has to be restarted.
Mpg's I made from old Video8 tapes with my PCTV TV-card will play in every
player and in WMM.
Both can be imported without a hitch, but the former mpg's don't appear as
thumbnails, but as icons.
What is happening here ? Anyone ???
 
My standard response to those trying to use MPEG-2 files in Movie Maker:

It is far easier to convert the MPEG-2 files to AVI files, and then use the
AVI files in Movie Maker, than it is to try to work with the MPEG-2 files
themselves - reported success is rare.

Thanks very much ! That seems to work. One more question though : would
those MPEG2 files be editable on ULEAD Video STudio 6 ? The converting to
AVI works fine, but those files are huge...
