I just got a sony handycam. The software that imports the video into the
computer plays the file fine, but when I try to use in movie maker, it is all
jumpy and choppy.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm having the same problem. I have a sony handycam and have been using
movie maker with it for years. Suddenly any video I import into movie maker
plays back choppy audio & video in the preview screen - even videos I've used
before. But if I add the clip to the time line, then it plays smoothly.
This makes it impossible to edit the clip first before adding to time line.
Can anyone out there help??

You could edit it in the timeline where it plays fine while trying to find
out why it isn't working proprly now.

As it used to work properly, then something must have changed.

What sort of handycam is it?
What sort of files does it make?
What changes have you made to your pc?

Check for updates to your graphics card, don't use windows update, this may
have updated your driver with an older one.

First of all.... thanks for answering my post !! I have a digital 8
camcorder and files go in as .wma files. don't think I've made any
significant changes to my computer recently. It is running slow lately & I'm
sure I could use more RAM. I used "end it all" to close all running programs
to see if that would help - no help. These video clips play normally on all
other programs and on the timeline....but it's hard to edit there as I often
record out of sequence and must rearrange pieces of the clips ALOT! I will
check my graphics card for proper driver but i have a feeling that isn't the
issue as the clips play everywhere else. Can you think of any other possible
solutions? Thanks for your time!!

Which version of MM are you using?
I assume you mean wmv not wma.

Try a test by importing as a very low resolution wmv file, does this make a
difference? If a small low res file works then it is most likely down to pc
specs, what are they?

Yes.. oops they are wmv files.. Im using MM2.1 As I was pressed for
time I worked around the 1st problem . Although it was time consuming &
maddening to do... I edited all movie clips on the timeline and cut and
pasted them where I needed. BUT now I am unable to save finished project to
my computer. I get the message "virtual memory too low" and the movie saves,
but only a portion saves correctly. I saved 5 times and got different result
each time. Audio works but video stops working and I either get black screen
or it freezes on a random photo as audio continues. It doesn't stop in same
place twice. I read all of the posts under "Virtual memory low" and see that
others have same problem. But no clear (or at least simple) solution.
It is a 45 minute movie with many video clips, photos & transitions. My C
drive has 1 GB hard drive remaining (out of 13) and video is saved on drive
with 100GB free.
My total physical memory is 512MB with 206MB shown as available
2GB total virtual memory with 1.96GB available.
I tried closing all other running programs and installed latest version of
DirectX
But only get a few more minutes out of it. The thought of starting all over
is crushing!! as I was to hand out this video last week and I've been working
on it for weeks. Is this a limitation of Movie Maker or of my operating
system? If I install more RAM (lots more) do you think it would resolve this?
I love Movie Maker and have used it for a few years without incident but my
projects are getting longer. Would I be better off purchasing another
program for the future after I resolve this?? Another thought... If I save
the MM project to an external hard drive (under "file" and "save project as")
would I be able to bring to some place like Best Buy. Would they be able to
get it on a disk that I could make copies of??
Did I ask enough questions?? LOL Im getting desperate..I NEED this
finished asap Thanks anyone for help!!!

It was definitely resources. I used the link you suggested to "split complex
project" and it worked. Thank you so much for the advise!!!!!!
