Hi Everyone,

I was using Word one day, and the I started to use the speech system. It
wouldn't work. I had to restart.

I tried to go into the Speech area in the Control Panel but I can't do
anything, I just get an error message whenever I try and do anything.

Error: "The requested task cannot be carried out because the necessary
engine could not be created. Pease select a different engine and/or audio
device".

After that, I am unable to change anything. And this I think is effecting my
voice conversations with MSN Messenger 6. I get an error "The audio
conversation with XXXX has ended".

Can you please assist me with this problem, this is the second time I have
posted this. Is there not anyone out there that can help me?

Regards,

Brendan Erskine

Hi Brendan,

The speech recognition engine must be installed. It is available with Office
XP, but it might not have been installed. Speech recognition engines are
language-specific.

There is no Speech Recognition Engine (SRE) built directly in to Windows XP.
You need to install a compatible engine, and in most cases, you'll install
it from one of two sources. More info here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/columns/moskowitz/02september23.asp

Checkpoints:

Control Panel/Regional and Language Settings/Language Bar/Details/Installed
services.

Control Panel/Regional and Language Settings/Language
Bar/Details/Advanced/Advanced text services.

I have the same problem as you.
It did work when i first installed office, i found my head set and configed the mic and all was well. Then i changed my
modem and loaded some XP hot fixies and it has never worked since. I have tried every thing. But i cant find that broken
chain in the register. Know i get the error that there is no input device installed and the config mic button is grayed
out. BUT i have the audio card setup and it is working great. In the audio properties i can test hardware and the mic
level meter shows me talking and the playback vol adjusts the sound level in the headset and speakers if they are on. I
can play mp3 or videos and have sound, i can record my voice with soundrec.exe but the speech think i have no input
devices. Also TTS when i try it says there are no output device installed. But i install Aces High TTS and it play back
the text no problem.

If have done a complete reinstall and that dose work and speech works again. BUT i have a power saver problem with my
monitor and my current load with broken speech, the power saver mode works i guess because i installed the older drivers
and then patches and services packs that broke it that one day the system rebooted and rebuilt everything and the
powersaver mode has worked right ever since.

Anyways good luck i don't think you can fix the problem you are having buy reinstalls.
You may also want to check, netmeeting because if any program is using the microphone then no other program can use it
including speech. Netmeeting has a setting the grabs the mic, and messenger also might be grabbing the mic.

BRENDAN

i forgot, you can search the microsoft site for the document, KB283159 and it has some info for you. It did not work for
me as i have tried to many things already, But it might work for you as you are still in the first mode of error when it
breaks.

Here is how to fix your problem.
Go to the windows\INF directory and find the file ASPI.inf
right click on the file and select install.

When it ask where to find the files, point it to your
windows XP CD. That should fix the problem you are having.

I am getting this same error. The response you got wasn't
particularly helpful. I have already tried them. I did notice that
there is a KB article #838659 that mentions a hotfix. I'm wondering
where I can get a copy of the hotfix without signing onto Passport?

Any ideas? Thx.
