See if this helps:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307719
"Sorting Internet Explorer 6.0 Favorites In Alphabetical Order".
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm#sort
"Sorting the Favorites automatically [on-the-fly] - Windows XP [by Keith
Miller]"

Thank you, but that seems to be only for 98. They other link explains how
to edit my registry which I try to avoid.

It's OK for WinXP too, Hal.

Windows version? Within what folders, where?

Expand a given folder via Favorites (topmost toolbar, not button) >
Right-click > Sort by name.

Open Favorites from the menu item, not the toolbar icon. Then right click
any of them and choose Sort by Name.

If you want them to automatically alpha-sort even as new entries are added,
you need a registry edit. Navigate to:

HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Menu
Order\Favorites

and delete the value named 'Order'. Also delete this value for any
subfolders. Then, with the favorite key highlited, click on Edit >
Permissions and deny 'Full Access' to Administrators, yourself, etc. This
will prevent the key from being automatically recreated.
