Sorting in "Open" file window

With Office 2000 I was able to sort on this window pane by type so that,
in the left pane, all folders were listed first, followed by individual
docs. Then, in the preview pane on the right, all docs listed in a
selected folder were sorted by date (most recent first).

Now, with Office 2003 for XP, I find it unable to do that (or I don't
see how). When I sort the left pane by type so that all folders come
first, then all docs within a given selected folder appear sorted by
type in the preview pane. When I then sort the docs in the preview pane
by date, so that I can have the most recent ones first, then the left
pane previously sorted by type reverts to most recently used first,
rather then by type.

Does this mean I can't have it both ways with 2003 XP as I could with 2000?

I think you're confusing Word's File Open dialog with Windows Explorer. It's
never been possible in Word to have two separate panes in the File Open
dialog, much less to sort them differently.

When I click on either the menu tab "File | Open" or the folder icon
representing "open file," I get a pop-up box that lists the location of
the word documents. If I then click on the "Views" icon and select
"Preview," a second pane -- on the right -- appears that shows the
contenbt of the document I have highlighted. The pane on the left still
shows the selected folder location. Thus, the pop-up box that comes up
when I "Open File" becomes a 2-pane window.

But there is no listing of documents in the second pane, and therefore no
order involved.

You're right! I apologize for the runaround. I checked back to my
initial post and noticed I had erred in what I was trying to describe.

When I first posted and replied to your responses, I was working at home
with a portable generator since all my power was gone due to Hurricane
Charley -- no a/c, no water, and only 2 lamps. It wasn't easy to use the
pc and I guess my home conditions were such that I became confused in
the process of trying to explain myself.

Now, howewer, I have electricity and a/c (Yeay!). Here's what I was
trying to explain:

You're right, the open file box does not list docs on the right and
folders on the left. What I meant to say was that whenever I sort on
"type" in the left pane -- with the right pane set to "preview" under
"View" -- so that my folders appear at the top of the list, and then
click open a given folder, the docs in that folder appear sorted ny
"name." I rather have these docs listed by "date modified," however, so
that the most recent ones appear first, but when I sort them on "date
modified" and then go back up to the orginal folder, these folders are
no longer sorted by "type" but by "name."

That's pretty bizarre because in my experience, settings made in the File
Open dialog apply to all views in any window. That is, if I sort by date and
then open a new folder, the files in that folder will be sorted by date. So
I'm afraid I don't know the answer to this question, but I've been (more or
less) where you are (Frederic 1979--no power for a week, but at least we did
have water and gas, so we could take hot showers!).

That's how it was under Office 2000. Now with XP 2003, it doesn't seem
to work in the same way, for me at least. Not sure if it has to do with SP1.

Well, we had no water while our power was out, since we're on a well and
needed power for the pump. But, we did use our 15 x 40 pool for
bathing and simple cooling off. We finally got our power back some 12
days later.

I skipped from Office 97 to Office XP, so evidently I missed this
interesting feature.

Oh, I've been there with the pump thing, too. The house where I grew up had
well water, which, combined with frequent power outages caused by routine
thunderstorms, made us really appreciate being able to flush toilets. OTOH,
since we also had a septic tank that was (apparently) higher than the
basement, we had some interesting experiences with that as well!
