Hi,

I'm fairly new to excel and brand new to these forums, and I already
seem to have run into a problem using excel. I'm attempting to make a
pseudo-Timeline using excel, listing the dates (in years) in Column A
and a short description in Column B. I merged a few cells in both
columns A and B to fit the text better before I started entering the
data, which I'm now realizing may be where my problem lies. *Anyway, as
I try to sort ascending based on the years listed in column A, I cannot
seem to figure out a way to keep the description (B) and its
corresponding year (A) together after the sort.* Column A is sorted but
I would like the descriptions in Column B to stay matched up with their
original dates from Column A. I have tried merging the two columns with
the hope I would then be able to sort, but it erases the description and
just leaves the date.

Any help at all in how to sort this data is appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

I would unmerge all the cells, then widen the columns, or wrap the text
to display it better.

To unmerge the cells --
Click the Select All button (to the left of the column A button)
Choose Format>Cells
Select the Alignment tab
Remove the check mark from the Merge Cells box
Click OK

To sort columns A and B together --
Select columns A and B
Choose Data>Sort
Choose to Sort by column A, click OK
