Are there choices as to how to sort files in a folder?
If so, how do I make choices?
Generally, I like Windows to sort files within a folder by file name
automatically. I thought this was happening while arrangint pictures in the
PICTURES folders. Then the auto sort stopped, for no reason I know.
As a default, I would still like to sort by file name.
Help, please.

View
Arrange Icons By
<your choice>
If the direction is wrong, do <your choice> a second time.
There is also a few "tick" options under View, Like "Auto Arrange", Align to
Grid. I usually use "Auto Arrange, so new items find their proper place .

To make the order stick, View Refresh (Or Press F5 ) after you get it the way
you like.

If you view in "Details" view, you can click the column heading: A tiny arrow
will appear to indicate the active column and sort direction.

Thanks for your help
HOWEVER I think I omitted vital information
I forgot to tell you I just "upgraded" to VISTA and I have been unable to
find anything comparable to the "view" commands of XP
When I click View in VISTA all I get are Icon size choices. At least I have
not found any sort function.

Thanks again.
Can you help me with VISTA

Thanks
I fear I misled you by omitting to say I recently "upgrded" to VISTA.
I have not found a sort function in View in VISTA.
Am I missing something?
Can you tell me how I choose the sort mode in VISTA.
Thanks again

Grumpy Goose,

You can still use DIRCMD /o/p to arrange files in alphabetical order at the
Command prompt.

Click Start, right click Computer, select Properties,
Select Advanced System Settings,
Click Environment Variables button,

Under User Variables For ..........
Click New,
Type DIRCMD for Variable Name,
Type /o/p for Variable Value.

OK back out to the Desktop.
Reboot.

Right click in the area where the files are listed to get the familiar view
options. OR (and this is what I do), press Alt to uncover the old menu bar
(File, Edit, etc) and click on View to select your preferred viewing mode.
