Are there any name brand computer manufacturers out there that include an
actual Windows install disk with your computer instead of a restore disk?

Generally the smaller ones, but Dell provide a full XP disk. It will work on
some non-dell pc's (for example an old no-name P2 400 i had) but not other
newer pc's.

I can't answer for all manufacturers, as some use a proprietary restore disc
or hidden partition on your hard drive, but we certainly supply all
computers we sell with an official non-proprietary Windows CD. Some
manufacturers, such as Dell supply a full Windows CD, but it's altered to
only install if it detects a Dell BIOS on the motherboard CMOS chip, so it
can't be used on anyone else's systems.

Nearly all the very best manufacturers do! Those *best* manufacturers
tend to the the mom and pop computer stores right in your
neighborhood.

Of course, I do as well. But I usually manufacture for only one
customer — me! ;-)

No. That said if you really want a stand-alone microsoft operating
system they can be had on many places on the net for free.

It's possible to use Dell install CDs on non-Dells. A few minutes on
Google should provide the info. If I remember correctly you need to
patch the 'am I a Dell?' executable (forget the name) and also replace
the NTLDR with one from a standard Windows CD.
