Most programs use the convention of showing either a rotated < or a / to
indicate the sequence that a column is sorted. I know that < is forward and
/ is reverse but why is this the standard rather that something that makes
more sense? Why not F and R or ^ and v or arrows or triangles or almost
anything else?

It's OK on mine, but you left out any information that might let me give a
guess as to your problem; like language, app names, where, when, etc etc
etc.

Outlook Express and Thunderbird at least. The Subject line window in OE at
this time shows "Subject /". If I click on it, it becomes "Subject <"
except that the < is rotated slightly.

I'm using XP Home SP2.

Could I be using the wrong font and if so how would I change it?

I just did a check of Windows Media Player since it also has sortable
columns. It also shows the < for the sort sequence. The / is not used. The >
is rotated in two directions to indicate sequence.

If there is a problem it is system wide.

I just checked the same things in mine; they're fine, no "/" that you
mention. What IS your language, and what do you have installed for a
language? Perhaps you have more than one installed? I have both the NA
english and Japanese installed, but when I screw up those two, it's pretty
obvious! <g>

I've got XP Pro, SP2 with fixes & Office 2002 installed.

Afraid I have no answers though, sorry.
