SORT is sorting my headings amongst the data

Yes.

My Data Range Has: header or no header

Excel will generally default to has header if you format the header row
differently. As in Bold or similar.

My headings are Bold, Yellow text on a purple background, and all text,
while the data isn't any of those things, and some of the data is
dates/numbers.

Still it sorts them amongst the data if I use the buttons (I know I can use
the data->Sort, but it's a shared book).

Is there anything else I can do to force it to see row 1 as headers?

thanks

It would help if you told us what version of Excel you are using, because
the menu options are different.

In general, you tell Excel that your data has a header row. It's a checkbox
in the Sort dialogue.

In 2007, it's on the top right of the dialogue box, and it says "My data has
headers". Check that box.

Personally, I never use the sort buttons to allow Excel to make choices for
me.

I pre-select my sort range then use Data>Sort where I can set my paramethers

BTW............a shared workbook allows Data>Sort.

Thanks for your message, the issue is not that I CAN'T sort it (I know I
can), but that because it will be used by many people, some of them will use
the buttons to sort the data, and inevitably someone will not notice and
mess it all up.

I want to set it up so that they can use the buttons without risk of
cock-up!

If using Excel 2003 you can drag the Sort submenu off the Data Menu and
remove sort buttons from Toolbar leaving users nothing but a button that
runs a macro to sort how you want it done.

When it comes to changing the Ribbon in 2007 version, I am lost.

Hi Michelle

If you are using XL2003 try using Data>List>my list has headers
If you are using XL2007 try Insert tab>Table>my table has headers

In each case, a series of dropdown filter buttons will appear in the header
row, when you click on any part of the List / Table
Two of the options on the dropdowns, apart from filtering, are Sort
Ascending and Sort Descending
These will always sort the Whole list or table correctly, and maintain the
header in the correct position.
