Sort contacts by last name?

Open Contacts
right-click on the "Name" heading, select "Last Name" to add that column
click on "Last Name" heading to sort up/down

Like in OE, you see not 'last name+first name', but 'full name' which
you choose when adding contact. For some contacts it may be first
+ last name, for another last + first name, or even nickname if you
fill this field. And exist together.
Open any contact, and change "full name" from list of possibilities to
last+first. If you do it for all contacts, then you may sort by "full name"
as you wish.

But the easiest method is to add new column to list of contacts
(rightclick on head of list, more, check lastname, moveUp, OK)
Now you have column 'last name', and you can sort by it.
