Sorry guys for posting this here but I have no clue where to post while the
group stays active and talented.

My ISP is netvigator in hong kong. And the contracts forbid running any
listening services of any kind. They blocked incoming port 80 and 8080
since the day I joined. I've been using 8210 since, but 3 months ago they
block that too.

So now I'd just pick any port and stay away from the icq and other ports
that other apps need. And today they blocked another one that I used for 2
months. I am starting to get pissed off and would like to ask the MasTARS
of the board:

Besides counterstrike 27015, 27005, what are the other critical onlone game
ports that I can use? Like diablo, or everquest? Cuz if I use those ports
and they end up blocking it, I can call them up and act like a noob and tell
them that my everquest stopped working. And they'd be forced to open it.

Please give me any game ports you guys know. Thanks.

You could always use an anonymous proxy or VPN to get out on the Web so you
can use all ports. I'd be careful fooling around with it though. You
don't want Big Bro to get you. They'll prob reading this now.

Quake is port 666.

Good luck,

You could consider honoring your contract. Or find a different ISP.

Stop breaking the rules and you'll be fine... Pay for a server package for
find a better ISP.

The thing is, if someone turns on the "remote desktop" feature from windows
xp, they're already breaking the rules and it's on by default.

And Netvigator is run by PCCW, it owns the whole Hong Kong network. All
other ISP's in Hong Kong do not block any ports, however, they're all on a
leases line from PCCW. So they're both customers and competitors of PCCW.
(More of a customer cuz they could just stop renewing their contracts if
they are actually competing.)

There is no "better" ISP in terms of bandwidth/stability in Hong Kong cuz
PCCW owns our asses. :P

Thanks to whoever posted about the anon proxy and VPN, will dig it up.

I use my real name purposely even when posting on newsgroups in order for
people to SPAM me more. It's ridiculous that netvigator is actually
charging you for a service they called "spam-filtering" as an added-on
service to their loyal customers. Shouldn't they turn it on default for the
health of their own networks?

*note to self, turn on the mail quota feature in 5 mins before you guys spam
me hehe*

Hey Bron

I found out about the port 80 block AFTER I had signed the contract. I
don't remember seeing anything about it being forbidden to run a server
though.

When I finally got around to setting up a web server, I found it didn't
work. I called the Netvigator "technical" dept ("technical" - what a
joke!!!), and they assured me that the ONLY blocked port was 25 (to
prevent spamming - which is reasonable). So I put the webserver on a
high port number, and Hey Presto - success!

Since then, I have set up a webcam, ftp server, and mail server in
addition to my webserver. They all work with no problems.

Netvigator really are a bunch of money-grubbing b*****ds. They are
expensive compared to other ISP's, and their service isn't so superior.
They appear to want everyone to conform to their limited idea of what
the internet is used for - or pay their extortionate prices for more
possibilities.

I could understand if I was slaughtering their bandwidth with my
servers - but I'm not. It's a simple home set-up, that's all.

In order to put this into perspective, the Danish provider
(Teledanmark) charge approx. HK$12 extra for a static IP (instead of
dynamic) - and anyone can run their webserver at home without
interference.

Instead of trying to force their "business model" on their customers,
Netvigator would be better off trying to be flexible and catering to
their needs. THIS customer will no longer be a customer once the
contract expires. HKBN, here I come!
