Relating to the BAD IMAGE problem.....this also occurs, First message is
C:\windows\system32\ShimEng.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check
this against your install disk
????Not even sure how to check it and I'm afraid, I'll mess everything up
again. I LOST everything once and don't want that again.
This occurred to me.....I don't even understand "Back Up". Does this mean I
have to put everything to an outside disk? Do I need an external hard drive?
Do I need an on-line spot for backup? Does a backup go into my other drive.
THIS is a simple question, I'm sure. BUT!! Not knowing, for sure, it's one I
hesitate to ask, in fear of being a complete idiot.

It would seem your system has a lot of important files on it that are
damaged. Yes, Backup is done to some outside location.
There are some things to try, depending on what tools you have available. An
original setup disk for XP would be useful, You might have a 'restore'
option available when you press F8 during startup, just after the BIOS
screen, and just before the windows crawler appears.
You can run a command from the Command Prompt that might fix the files, but
you should take the system to Windows Update after that. Type the command:
sfc /scannow

Before you do anything else...burn all the data you need to keep
to DVD's .Anything you cannot afford to loose.

Once you are sure all your data are backed up
post back for recovery options.
It might come to a total re-install...
