After doing all the research and checking all the sites, and reading the
groups, I just got in all the parts to build a new server system for Windows
SBS 2003 including two 74Gig SATA WD Raptors.

I get it assembled, only to read in the manual that this board that supposedly
supports several flavors of RAID (according to the ASUS website), actually DOES
NOT support any form of Raid on the SATA channels except for that damn Raid 0 !

The other useful forms of RAID only work on the Parallel ATA channels !
And even that is ONLY under Windows XP - I wonder if that means Server 2003
too ?, probably not.

God, I HATE companies that don't spell out the WHOLE story up front!
Damn You ASUS!, Damn You.

The manual is available online for download in .pdf format, without
purchasing the board.

I always read the manuals BEFORE buying. Live and learn.

You should have done research in SERVER type boards. ASUS makes a PC-DL
Deluxe board that supports Dual Xeon, SATA, IDE, RAID SATA, and has a
Gigabit NIC.

The board supports ONBOARD RAID 1 and RAID 0 for 2 SATA Channels, and it
supports RAID 0 or 1 with the other 2 SATA channels or the IDE channels.

Relax.

Download the latest version of the Intel Application Accelerator RAID
Edition.

http://downloadfinder2.intel.com/scripts-df/filter_results.asp?strOSs=44&ProductID=961

The text for 3.5.3 states the following:

"Intel® Application Accelerator RAID Edition provides support for Serial
ATA RAID 0 & RAID 1 on select Intel® 865 and 875 chipset-based PCs with
ICH5R."

The readme says that it supports W2K and XP, but you may be able to get
it to work on 2K3 as well.

If you wanted something that specific you really should have done some more
research, putzy. Take it back.

Thanks Max !
But, I have spent the morning on the phone with Intel and No one there (or in
Costa Rica!) Seems to know if it will Support Windows 2003 Server and I am not
really too thrilled with just taking my chances, only to run into some
incompatability later.

And to the other replies about doing my homework first,
read this, taken directly from the ASUS website, which I relied on.

"ICH5R with Integrated SATA and RAID 0,1
Intel is the world's first chipset maker to integrate Serial ATA (SATA) and
RAID 0, 1 functions into the South Bridge. The latest ICH5R chipset now
delivers 150MB/s fast data transfer (SATA) and striping performance to enhance
computing efficiency."

Seems to me that is more than a bit misleading since the SATA channel DOES NOT
support Raid 0 according to the manual you get once you purchase the produc t!

Hi,

I suggest you cut your losses so to speak and buy a supported sata raid
controller card if you feel you can't trust the drivers as they are - that
is what I would do.

Intel is not too likely to put Windows 2003 as an option for ICH5R unless it
achieves or plans to achieve Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) test
status for it - Intel does this (device driver writing) probably better than
anyone except perhaps MS. Why? Windows 2003 is a Server only product so to
state support for it is a burdon unless it is of WHQL quality.

As you should have seen by now, the drivers and bios support came out
originally with only raid 0 offered. Raid 1 support came later. If you use
the Intel Application Accelerator to its fullest extent (IE create raid 1
partitions at run time) you will see that it is a work in progress - the
implementation is ahead of the documentation.

So, they may intend on achieving WHQL. The drivers are heading that way
steadily. Experience (on W2K Server, Pro and XP) is that it is lacking in
only some minor areas IE Email notifications for drive failures and perhaps
other alert options. Raid is after all there to protect data 1st and
foremostly - everything else including the disc drives, WHQL, claimed OS
support etc come last.

If you really are running Windows 2003, you can always use Microsoft's
built-in software RAID 1 support, which is quite reliable and will
probably perform equivalently to Intel's software-based RAID 1.

You can even get striping using Microsoft's solution, if that's what you
really wanted.
Seems to me that is more than a bit misleading since the SATA channel DOES NOT

ICHR supports SATA RAID 0 and 1 on XP, so it's not entirely misleading.

Just be aware that if you do that, the second disc in the mirror will not be
bootable by default as it will not have a boot sector etc. The mirroring is
at the partition content level only.

You will need to convert the disc to dynamic from basic before the option to
do this will appear.

I have a p4p800 deluxe and when I try to install the Application
accelerator, I get a message saying I don't have compatible hardware.

Does this MB need this or not?
