My beloved 21" F520 has developed a rather annoying habit of
repeatedly flickering and blinking on and off. This isn't the sort of
refresh rate sort of flicker it's more of a screen distortion whick
blinks across the screen.

It's beeen back to Sony and they said there's nothing wrong with it.
I've tried different powercables, monitor cables, tried the monitor on
another computer and tried the computer with a different monitor and
the problem most definatly seems to lie with the monitor.

I'm starting to think that there maybe somthing close to the monitor
which effects it. Could another electrical device close by cause this
sort of problem? It is surrounded by the usual bits of office
equipment such as a modem, speakers +Dolby Digital decoder, telephone,
another monitor, scanner, printer etc... I did seem to get some
temporary relief when I degaussed the monitor.

Any thoughts, it's driving me nuts???

Unplug all that other stuff and see if problem persists.
Speakers have permanent magnets, move those away during the
unplug-test. Note whether anything else on same AC circuit
is cycling on/off. Does monitor make any usual sounds when
it happens?

I've unplugged everything else except for the computer and I still get
the same problem. When it flicks it makes a sort of 'tink' noise for
each flick. When it goes blank you can hear these 'tink tink' noises
in fast succesion as the monitor tries to display properly.

A picture is worth a thousand words so if anyone's willing to see a
short avi of my woes and offer their diagnosis you can find it at:
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~uijk/dodgysony.avi (4.1MB)

After about 5 seconds you can see a line of distortion flick accross
the screen about a third of the way from the bottom this is followed
by a complete loss of the picture.
