I am pleased PapaJohn is going to hopefully report on how to successfully
transfer the information on the Mini Disks in to Windows Movie Maker 2. I
have tried importing into Pixela Image Maker (their program that comes with
the camera), and saving the project as an MPEG2 files. I thought Windows
Movie Maker 2 would be able to read this file in this format. I have been
able to get the picture, but not the audio. I am looking forward to your
research on the Mini Disks. We have had this camera since last Christmas.
The pictures are great, but the editing process is the pits. We have Windows
Movie Maker 2 and My Sonic DVD (hoping to be able to burn a finished edited
project. This has been a very frustrating process for months.

Hi Ken,

While you're waiting for the newsletter, here's a sample of a high quality
WMV file that I made from the Mini Disk (if that's the right name for the
small 30 minute DVD disks for the Handycam).... it's almost 9 MB and runs
less than a minute.

http://www.eicsoftware.com/PapaJohn/ChrisJulie/HighQualitySample.wmv

but shows the quality of the converted files.

Less in quality are the two full 15 minute files I was able to make from the
disk.... in 320x240 dimensions - they are each about 85 MB... but should
start playing shortly after clicking on.

No editing of the raw footage.... so please stop at any time.

I don't have the camcorder or the Pixela Image Maker software, so I ended up
doing it with TMPGEnc and MM2, starting with the VOB files.

The newsletter was done yesterday, but today my Toshiba laptop kind of died
and I don't have a backup copy of the new newsletter...

hi papajohn,

i viewed parts of the first 2 links below to see what real video should look
like and just as i suspected, i am definitely doing something wrong, when it
comes to filming. LOL
based on what i saw, i think for the most part i am too far away from the
people.
do you remember how far away you were while on the boat in the camcorder-1
clip?

does the high quality sample file look so good because you used the tmpge
software and added your "touch" to it or does it look so good because it was
taken with a really expensive camcorder?

i should probably know this but i don't - is there normally a difference in
quality between digital video cameras and camcorders?

thank you.

ps. i hope you get your laptop fixed soon.

hello papajohn,

does the high quality sample file look so good because you used the tmpgenc
software and added your "touch" to it or does it look so good because it was
taken with a really expensive camcorder?

i read all of the pages for tmpgenc plus 2.5
http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tp.html to learn more, but really
didn't understand what the software does. is tmpgenc plus 2.5 the version
that you used? i think it does something to improve video clips, which is
something that i truly need - smile - but that's all i really understood.

i then stumbled onto this page
http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/enc_chart.html which made some sense.
if you used version 2.5, you would have to convert the wmv file in movie
maker to avi to use this version. is that right?
after reviewing the output file format options, it seems like you must have
used 3.0 xpress to get the wmv format that you used in the high quality
sample file that you uploaded.

is it me, or does the site not provide enough info if this is all new to
you?

as you can tell, i am really confused.

i would like to create video like your high quality sample <ok, maybe not
that good right now - smile> and then create a vcd for now and later a dvd.

i would greatly appreciate it if you could give me a check list of what i
need to do.

thank you.

: Hi Indera,
:
: Thanks but I didn't take the video... one of my sons shot the footage and
: just handed me the disc so I could study it and how to get the files into
: Movie Maker for editing.
:
: The quality is typical of what I've been seeing from DV camcorders.... but
: yes, it might vary a bit by the camcorder brand and model.

thank you papajohn.

i will check out the link and will work through it.
thanks again.
