Sony 820A EIDE CD-DVD Burner

This has turned out to be an interesting problem as well as a time
swallower!

AMD Athlon XP-M processor (2083Mhz) MBD , MSI K7N2 Delta 2, MS-6570E Nvidia
Nforce 2 chipset (MBD version without on board video) 1Gig RAM
Maxtor IDE HD Primary EIDE channel Master (UDMA 5)
Sony DRU 820A DVD/CD burner Secondary EIDE channel master Code 10 & Yellow ?
Previously installed Sony DRU-700A works in UDMA mode 2 OK on same port with
same cable. (80pin, or with also tested 40 pin cable)
(Sony DRU-820A drive recognized in Windows, but not functional, no drive
letter, etc. in UDMA modes, functions OK in PIO mode. (Too slow to use
successfully as a burner)

Same hardware configuration works in Linux with the Sony 820A working in
UDMA 4 ok, UDMA 2 OK, PIO mode OK. Drive checked also ok on a very similar
variant of the above system that runs Linux.

Interestingly enough, the specs for the drive are early specs and only
located in the Sony on line store site, not the normal sony support site.
The (early) spec shows UDMA mode 2, yet the drive will work in UDMA mode 4
under linux if an 80 pin cable is used.

Atapi.sys version 5.1.2600.1106 is installed.
The Drive is supplied with Nero 6.6 (updated to current sub versions)
winaspi32.dll (Nero) 2.0.1.74

Windows XP SP1a + not to full SP-2 (All applicable updates installed per
custom update list in windows update short of the SP-2 Express update. (Full
install of SP-2 causes problems with a TCP/IP networked Brother all in one
620n Fax functionality)

We also installed the Sony 820A in an external USB 2.0 HDCD/DVD adapter-
it seems to work ok, at least as a high speed CD-Rom drive and DVD player.

We tried uninstalling & reinstalling the windows XP EIDE drivers, which had
no effect.
At this point, I'm suspecting the Sony I/O timing is right over/on the edge
somehow. I was able to occasionally get the unit to work for short periods
in UDMA mode under windows.
(There are no updates currently available for the 820A's firmware from
Sony.) Mfg date is January 06.

Before I return this to the vendor, does anyone have any words of advice
that might help solve the problem?

AH, Well--
Gave up returned the unit, and replaced it with a similar (horrors) Memorex
drive
Plug&Pray worked as expected, no problems. Drive came up as UDMA mode 2 as
expected.
Since the 820A and PC hardware checked out in Linux, my only conclusion is
the the 820A isn't quite ready for prime time. Sony claime they don't
support Linux, imagine that!
