Sonata II - what to do with vent left when air duct is removed?

I'm not planning to use the airduct with the Sonata (the one which runs
from over the CPU fan out of the case) so I've removed it. However,
this leaves an open grilled vent in the case which, I presume, will let
dust in and noise out. How have others dealt with this?

Why not install an additional fan, anyway? There are some
very good quiet ones that spin at around 1500 to 2000 RPM.
And one should never eschew the opportunity for more and
better ventilation of the other motherboard components.

Well, I can't imagine anyone not using the side air duct. It is fully
adjustable to direct cooler outside air onto the CPU. You could cut
and roll up furnace filter material and place that into the duct base
and not use the adjustable extension. If you roll it up loosely it
will allow some fresh air into the case which is always a good thing.
Change the filter every year.

On one case I have here, that had a side vent, I made an aluminum
plate to cover the hole. You can paint it if the color bothers you,
but I didn't waste time on that. I like thin aluminum sheet metal
from the hardware store.

On my steel Evercases I just slap a large refrigerator magnet over the
grill. Works fine. :-)

One word-duct tape-woops 2 words

That fresh air side duct will make a big difference in the idle
temp of the cpu. Nonsense to remove it.

Thanks for the replies; just to note the grille I'm talking about isn't
for a fan. It's a rectangular one which can be seen in this picture, on
the bottom-right of the rear of the case:

http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/directron/sonata202.jpg

The grille has a clip-on sleeve into which the vent is then slotted.

I didn't install the included vent since (a) it doesn't fit my CPU
cooler and (b) from all accounts I've read, it makes little or no
difference to the CPU temperature or noise.

As to leaving it open, well, it doesn't make sense have a washable dust
filter on the front if I leave the back of the machine open (my
apartment does get quite dusty and my previous case used to get
horrendously clogged up).

And even with the vent currently open, I'm seeing cooling problems
(idle CPU temp is 55 Celsius), so I'd rather install a filtered front
fan.

I'm thinking that the best thing to do would to be to buy the Acoustic
Foam pack:

I presume one of these pieces can be inserted into the clip-on sleeve
mentioned above, and covers the vent.

P.

There's a highly scientific solution for this problem: it's called duct tape!
