Something very odd is going on with my Contacts

When I am composing a new message or forwarding an existing one, and I click
on the address book icon to insert addresses, I get a message telling me "The
address list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with
this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or
you do not have permissions. For information on how to remove this folder
from the Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Outlook Help." The only options
for this warning are to click an OK button or to close it by the red X
button; there's a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark on the left side.
After I click the OK button, a box comes up titled, "Select Names" and says
'Show Names from the:' and the word 'Contacts' in a drop down box alongside
that; below that is 'Type Name or Select from List:' and I can access the
contacts list through that. But why am I getting the inital warning? I
thought there was only one place to put contacts, and this seems like there
are more than one place to list them. And is contacts the same as the
address book? Also, why is there an address book icon not only next to the
boxes for 'To:' and 'Cc:' (which is to be expected), but also in the task bar
above those lines? Thanks for all your help.

Have you checked the list of folders here in OL2003: Tools menu > Email
accounts > View/Change existing directories > Click Next > Highlight Outlook
Address Book > Click Change

When I did that, I got a box headed with "Microsoft Outlook Address Book"
then saying "To designate a Contacts folder as an Outlook Address Book, go to
the Properties dialog box for the Contacts folder. On the Outlook Address
Book tab, select the "Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book" check
box.". Then there are 2 items, both say 'Contacts: Personal Folders'. Then
I have the 'Remove Address Book' button; 'Show names by' with options for
'First Last (John Smith)' or 'File As (Smith, John)' and the Close button.

If I choose to remove one of the Address Book items listed, I might remove
contacts; how do I know which one to remove? Is there a way to get into
those files to see which names are in there? Or is there a way to merge the
two files into one, and delete duplications?

Remove both and reset your standard contacts folder as an email address
book. Right click on the folder, choose Properties, go to the Outlook
Address Book tab

No, you're just removing the references from the Outlook Address Book
service.

The weirdness continues ... sorry to be so dense about this, but here goes
the next part.

I removed both of the Address Book items listed. I checked to make sure
that the contacts folder is still checked to "Show this folder as an e-mail
Address Book" which it is. So I am still having the same thing -- when I
click on one of the Address Book icons to get a name, I get that same
original message that says "The address list could not be displayed ...
[etc.]" and when I click on the OK button, the box comes up that's titled
"Select Names". From there on, it seems to work fine -- but it just seems
odd that I am still getting that first warning box. And it doesn't seem like
it's supposed to work that way.
