Using FP 2002 I just now noticed in Folders List under images, I apparently
have two sets or groups of images. One set or group is inside the images
folder and the other one is under it. I used some of the images under the
images folder to replace/overwrite images inside the images folder. Please
someone help me out here and explain what is taking place. Can I safely
delete some of the images inside the images folder? Thanks very much!

If you're looking at yuour Web in Windows explorer and see
pairs of files like:

images\myself.gif
images\_vti_cnf\myself.gif

don't delete anything. images\_vti_cnf\myself.gif is
actually a text file where FrontPage keeps track of
internal information.

Otherwise, you can move any pictures files you want from
anywhere else and drop them in the images folder. Just do
this in FrontPage so that FrontPage can adjust all your
<img> tags to reflect the new locations.

You should, of course, not relocate files FrontPage
creates for use by Themes or other components.

Thanks for answering. I'm not looking at these files in Windows Explorer but
in Normal View with the Folders List showing on the left. The files in
question are graphic files that were used to overwrite or replace other
graphic files. My inexperience may show here, but I assumed that like other
Office programs, when I used one file or graphic to replace another, the one
being replaced would vanish or be automatically deleted from the Web. Now
I'm not sure and I'm concerned that FP is uploading all the files to the
server and that is adding unnecessary "weight" or download time to the
file/Web.

No when you modify / resample a graphic in FP and save it, FP does not delete the old graphic

Well OK then, but how do experienced designers/developers get rid of
graphics that they modify/resample/replace or overwrite?

While in the design process, I am constantly comparing different graphics on
a page for suitability. Then when I choose which one I want I sometimes will
use the chosen graphic to overwrite the other one. After doing that I might
modify it further by changing size several times, then resampling.

Often I will even export it back into a graphics editor to tweak it, finally
importing back into FP as the "final". I'm guessing that any graphics that
get uploaded to the server count against the download time.

Is there a system or process that experienced developers follow to get rid
of no-longer-needed graphics?

Wasn't intended to be cute. You asked how some of us did it, and I
responded with how I did it. What's not to understand? Or, perhaps you
didn't ask the question right.

Tom, I apologize. I may have reacted to your answer too quickly. It seemed
that you were making fun of what you perceived to be a pretty dumb question
posted by me. I guess I'm just struggling.

No problem, Buddy.
You are trying to overcomplicate things. Follow Tom Rowe's advice, and
don't do your image work within FP, it'll just cause headaches. Do your
image work in your graphics program and import the images into your web
before inserting on the page. You won't have to put up with the saving and
embedding.

FP only saves your graphic when you have:

1. Inserted it on your page without importing it into the current open FP
web.
2. You re-sample the image and use any of the image editing tools.

There is no means of looking at all of your graphic image other than to
create a blank page in your web, and then drag the images on to the page to
see what they are, which is what I do.

Maybe I place too much emphasis on having graphics, particularly photos,
look exactly the way I want them to look on a finished page. I do edit them
FIRST in PSP and then by clicking on the "Insert Picture from File" icon, I
bring up my pictures folder and select from there. After that, though, I
fiddle with them-resize, maybe look at it on the left, the right-that sort
of thing. I think this is why I'm getting more graphics than I need (somehow
leftover) from the fiddling.around that I do.

So...I'm trying to figure out how to speed up my design process by finding a
way to quickly separate the needed graphics from the no-longer-needed ones.
Surely, other designers do this too. What I'm looking for is a simple
process that I can follow to either delete the no-longer-needed graphics as
I go, or, a way to identify the ones that don't need to get uploaded and
delete them all at one time. Thanks for reading.

Buddy,

Here is how I handle this situation. I import the image into the current
open FP, then open my page and insert the image on my page, resize the
image, then I view image properties and note the new width and height, I do
not save the page or the image changes. I now open my image application and
resize the image, save to my desktop again, then import into back into FP
using the same name, and re-insert on my page.

One last question. Does it make a difference later whether I take the extra
step to drag all the images into the Images Folder before uploading, or is
that just a matter of how tidy someone might be? Thanks for all the help.

Drag and drop should be the same as importing the images.

You can place the images any where you want in your web, but you must import
them into your web before using. The images folder is the most logical
place, and I tend to use it as well, in most cases.

Tom:

As I recall, you have always equated dragging and dropping with importing.
Am I incorrect with this?

As I recall, you have always equated dragging and dropping with importing.
Am I incorrect with this?

Or just configure your image editor (PSP) in FP for .jpg and .gif
Tools Options Configure Editors
Then when working in FP if you need to change an Imported Image, just double click it, (PSP will open), edit / save it and close
your image editor (FP will use the new PSP edited image) and adjust the file attributes (img height / width) through out your web
and never have to resave the image in FP
--

|

Thanks for your straight forward reply, Thomas. I'm obviously getting
confused on how to seperate what is being saved by FP from what is not. Does
FP save a graphic only when I see the Save Embedded Files dialogue box or
does it save at other times, like when a page is saved? After the site is
completed, just before uploading, is there a way to look at all the graphic
files that I've used, and determine which ones I will need to keep and which
to delete?

There's a way to do this, but it's not 100% accurate.

To take a look, choose Reports from the View menu, then Problems, then
Unlinked Files. This will display a list of the files FrontPage
believes appear in no hyperlinks, <img> tags, or other components in
your Web. Another name for these is "orphaned files".

The problem is that there's a lot of tricky HTML in the world, and
FrontPage doesn't necessarily detect all references to a page or
picture. As a result, there's no guarantee that removing a picture on
the Unlinked Files report won't be harmful.

Nevertheless, if you must try this:

1. Publish a copy of your web to a test location.
2. Open the test location.
3. Display the Unlinked Files report.
4. Select all the pictures it reports, and then press the Delete key.
5. Test your test Web and replace any pictures that seem to be
missing.
