For some reason it stopped working. I tried reinstalling it both overwritting
it and uninstalling it and I get the following message...

(Service "Windows Defender Service" (WinDefend) failed to start. Verify that
you have sufficient privileges to start system services.)

Could this be a result from some new spyware that is disabling it?

Please reply to (e-mail address removed) if you know how to fix this. I even tried
a system restore and it still produces the same error.

Could it be that you are on Windows 2000? If not, please provide more
details, e.g. Windows version, Defender version.

I am using Windosws XP Media Center, it also seems to be rebooting when I
sleep, every moring when I wake up everything I had opened is closed and the
loging window is up. I think I am being hacked. Some one has found a way to
disable defender and not allow me to put it back on so I can keep being
hacked.

When you mention uninstalling and reinstalling--did you do a new download
from Microsoft--or did you simply reinstall the downloaded file you had on
hand?

I would suggest doing a new download from www.microsoft.com of Windows
Defender, and install that--no need to do an uninstall of what is in place.
Let's see what happens once you've done that.

Yes Dragon, the first final release of Defender didn't occur until October
23, so you certainly need a refresh from the Ms download site, you still
have the Beta download right now.

It worked!

Thank you for your help. It's not logging out by itself anymore and my work
stays intact.

Good job!
