something is infectioning my hardware

the other day my computer gave me a message saying that is wasn't a virus but
something like it that would eventually spread from one program to another
and before i could push the button that i needed to my son closed me out of
it.... so now i am trying to work with my computer and my mouse and my
keyboard work half the time. i am using windows xp. it also said that my
virus pertection would not be able to find it that i had to use something
else in my computer to find it. so if this makes sense to anybody could you
please reply

I doubt your keyboard and mouse problems are due to a virus. You should
check your keyboard and mouse cable connections in the back of your computer
and reboot. If that doesn't help, I'm thinking you may need a new keyboard
and/or mouse. If you have another one, for example attached to another
computer, you can swap those in temporarily into the troubled computer to
see if a new keyboard or mouse would help.

Let me guess, did it say something like "Your computer may be infected with
spyware or adware?" Those virus pop-ups are often from the Internet and may
just be trying to sell you something. A copy of the message may be stored
in your Windows event logs [click on Start, Run, type EVENTVWR and click
OK] or somewhere in the logs in your antivirus program.

You can get free antivirus from http://free.grisoft.com It's just as good
at detecting viruses as any other product, more or less. Make sure your
antivirus is automatically downloading updates every day or so. Also, go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and make sure you aren't missing any
Microsoft patches.

You can get free anti-spyware software like Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ Some people also like Ad-aware,
which is at www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
