Someone smarter than Dell Customer Supper PLEASE HELP with XP error message 1402

I have purchased a new Dell Dimension 2400 Desktop. Because of multiple error messages and lacking availability of competent customer support from Dell, I wiped out my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition. I also reinstalled all necessary programs and Dell supplied drivers. As I was installing the final driver (Dell Support 2.1) I got an error message. The installation was almost complete and was writing registry values when the following error message came up

Error 1402 - Could not open key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Dell\Support\2.0\module

The driver stopped installation and then reversed what installation had been performed from that driver

Any ideas what is causing this installation to fail and how I can fix it
