I have an Advent computer with 3.36Ghz and 1gb DDR RAM so you would expect my computer to be a flying machine. But recently it has become annoyingly sluggish and i dont know how to fix it. I have used disk defragmenter, cleaned the drives and downloaded programs that are supposed to make your computer faster and nothing works. I have also checked for viruses and there arent any. Does anyone know what i can do?? Many thanks in advance

any recently installed programs that may have caused this?

I am by no means an expert, but you could try to get rid
of all the stuff in your internet cache.(easy- use clean
sweep in norton systemworks or mcaffee quickclean). It
sounds like you have plenty of memory, but sometimes it
helps if you make your swap file static- it stays the
same size- just make it plenty big enough. Also, getting
rid of the fancy display properties helps(shadows,
etc...) Delete your temporary files and folders in the
internet options in tools of your browser periodically.
Take a long look at all the programs that start when
windows starts. Do you really need all of them the moment
you boot?, or could you open some of them when needed-
the less your computer has to do, the faster. Go to start
menu, click on run, type in msconfig, click ok. Click on
start up tab(try to resist the tempation of doing
anything on the other tabs- you can do some serious
damage) Look at the list of programs that windows starts
automatically(the ones that are checked- which is
probably all of them)Uncheck the ones that you are
certain you don't need every second and the ones that you
are absolutely certain what programs they open. When you
restart, you will see that you changed your
configuration, and are in diagnostic mode- that is your
intention- to diagnose what programs are slowing you
down, you can always go back to normal startup later
(msconfig)

I have the same problem.
I did the following:
Start \ run \ msconfig \ startup tab

On General tab by default it is by default checked "Use
normal start up".
After I disabled some programs I am getting every time I
start Widows the following message:
You have used the System Configuration Utility to make
changes to the way Windows starts.
The System Configuration Utility is currently in
Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode causing this message
to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows
starts.
Choose the normal startup mode on General tab to start
Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the
System Configuration Utility. If I follow this advise,
all programs are again enabled automatically.
What to do?

I found that the following programs under Startup tab
were enabled:
ccApp
ccRegVfy
Winampa
qttask
Save
P2P Networking
Wupdater
points manager
CMESys
ctfmon
msnmsgr
Gsturtup
Microsoft Office
Symantec Fax Starter Edition Port
DirectCD
Kaza
MsnMsgr
Acrobat Assistant
Billminder
GuruNet
Quicken Scheduled Updates
Quicken Startup
Which of thse programsd I can desable without damage to
the Windows?
For now I disabled all programs from Direct CD to the end
of this list.
Thanks.
