Somehow It's Gone!

I had a file where all of my newborn Son's pictures were being kept. I went
to access the file folder this morning and the folder is gone. I don't know
if I or my Wife accidently deleted it. I did a search for the file name and
say file not found. If it did get deleted, is there anyway to recover this,
or are we without our Son's pictures for good?

I appreciate any help. I don't know much about computers, so i though I
would ask.

there is a freeware
called Recuva.

it can recover files
that are still remaining
on the harddrive.

Hi Doug,

If it was accidently deleted and you haven't emptied the Recycle Bin,
look in the Recycle Bin for the Folder.

Also use Explore and expand the Folder Tree, it may have been moved into
another folder and still be available to you.

Once you find it, back up your Photos to a DVD-RW or CD-RW Disks and I
say Rewriteables, because you have children and if you make a mistake, you
can reuse the disk again. A DVD-R or CD-R are wasted if you make a mistake.

Explore - Right-click Start and click Explore.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on freeware? I tried the Recuva, but
after it downloads, it won't let me open the file which is an .efw file. Is
there something I'm doing wrong? Sorry, I'm starting to freak out a bit
about these photos.

Thanks

if the files still
exist then the
freeware will
show them and
give you the
option to restore
the files...

Did you look in the Recycle Bin? Right click and check for recovering
deleted files. If you haven't emptied it since they disappeared, or turned
it off, then they might be located there yet, and are recoverable.

If these are your only copies, it's time to think about learning to Back Up
your data files.

If you know the file extension try searching on it. Remote chance the file
name changed.

Thank you all so much for the replys. I know, I need to start backing them
up. I just learned that the hard way.
Okay, i think I found them....in C:\Program
Files\RegistryFix\RegistryFixBackup. They are in Compressed Folders, and
when i go to extract all files, it says "file 'Config' is password protected
and to enter it. Every password I have entered, doesn't work.......

I had a file

You mean "folder."

"Deleting" a file (or folder) doesn't actually delete it; it just
marks the space as available to be used. There are third-party
programs that can sometimes recover deleted files. The problem is that
the space used by the file is likely to become overwritten very
quickly, and this makes the file unrecoverable.

So your chances of successfully recovering this file are decent if you
try recovering it immediately after deleting it, and rapidly go
downhill from there. If you've been using the computer since then (for
example to write this question and read this answer), your chances are
probably very poor by now.

But if the file is important enough, it's worth a try anyway. Stop
using the computer in question immediately, if you haven't done so
already. Download an undelete program (here's one:
http://www3.telus.net/mikebike/RESTORATION.html but there are several
others to choose from; do a Google search) on a friend's computer and
bring it to yours on a floppy to try.

If this fails, your only other recourse is to take the drive to a
professional file recovery company. This kind of service is very
expensive and may or may not work in your case.

Here's the most important thing you need to learn about computers:

If you have things on your computer that are important to you, you
*need* to have backup of them, stored on media external to the
computer itself. It is always possible that a hard drive crash, user
error, nearby lightning strike, virus attack, even theft of the
computer, can cause the loss of *everything* on your drive. As has
often been said, it's not a matter of whether you will have such a
problem, but when.

Hi Doug,

Question: Have you simply tried doing a Windows System Restore? Go back
before the accident. Once the folders and files you want are recovered, you
can undo the Windows System Restore. Just make copies of the folders and
files you want onto a CD or DVD that you want to use. Don't move the folders
or files, because you may not be able to undo the System Restore.

I found this post hoping there would be magic answer but I'm afraid I know
the answer. I just bought a new computer and of course it has Vista on it. I
was transferring my photos (I have 1,000's!) and making back up copies as I
went. Well somehow, when I went back INTO Vista, all the photos that HAD been
there are GONE!! I've searched and searched but two of the most important
folders are gone. I've also deleted them from the old computer (file too
large for recycle do you want to permanantly delete?) and I DID. Now for the
sadest part of my story - I didn't seem to have copied those folders - have
several copies of others but none of all my family photos from 2006 and 2007!
Is there ANY hope???

Thanks!

You posted to a thread rather than starting your own. Many people will
miss your post because of this, since they'll think it's a response, or
comment to a somewhat-closed subject. Did you read the replies to the
thread? One of them was quite similar to my suggestion below:

Download and run Restoration or another Undelete program. The more you
use the hd with the deleted files, the more data you overwrite, so you
should download the program to a flash drive, or floppy and run it from
there.

If there is to be any hope, stop and shut that system OFF, NOW. Remove the
drive, attach it to another system, and use data recovery software. Every
second that you use the drive reduces the chance of recovery. Do not use
that drive for anything, especially not running an operating system, until
you are sure that you have recovered the data or that it's unrecoverable.
Do not attempt to recover to the drive you are recovering from. Do not
install anything to it, and do not allow System Restore to monitor it.

If you do actually need to keep using that system, get another drive, take
it and the original drive to another sytem and download cloning software,
such as the Acronis True Image trial (www.acronis.com). Clone the
existing drive to the new one FROM ANOTHER SYSTEM, do NOT install the
software to the existing drive. This will likely cost you under $100 and
take from 20 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on setup. Most of the
time will be spent waiting for the process to run.

Once the cloning process is complete, install the new drive, and you can
proceed to attempt data recovery from the original drive.

Finally, there are data recovery services. These will always give an
estimate of what they think they can recovery, but the estimates sometimes
aren't free. Costs can start at $500 or so and regularly exceed $1000;
they depend on the physical condition of the drive (not working costs more)
and on the type and amount of data to be recovered. If you can tell them
exactly what you're looking for and where it was, they will take less time.

You can also take the help of Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery
Software to recover your deleted data. Stellar Phoenix provides
recovery of documents, spreadsheets, web content, images, pictures.
Stellar Phoenix are helpful in the following cases
* Recover deleted files after recycle bin has been emptied or use
of Shift+Delete key
* Recover missing and lost logical drives (volumes)
* Recover formatted hard drives (even after reinstalling operating
system)
* Recover re-partitioned hard drives (even after file system has
been changed)
* Recover lost files and folders

Yes, there is lots of data recovery software. Downloading it and/or
installing it to the drive you're trying to recover from is a very, very bad
idea.
