I posted this to Microsoft.public.windowsxp.general but no luck:
=================================================================
Coincidental with installing Nero 7.1, I started getting error messages from
Outlook Express - always during Nero operations so far.

Funny thing is that I never, *ever* use Outlook Express - It just happens tb
installed bc I took the defaults when installing Office 2003.

So far the messages have all contained the same text:
-----------------------------------------------------------
"The address book failed to load. Outlook Express is incorrectly installed.
Please re-install."
-----------------------------------------------------------

Understood that correlation is not causation... but still...

The first thing that came to my mind is that I picked up some sort of malware
when I D/L'd and installed Nero and it's trying to get to my (non-existent or
empty...) Outlook Express address book.

Anybody heard of such messages from Outlook Express?

Since then, I re-imaged the PC in question with a known good image of XP,
without Nero. Seemed tb ok for awhile. Then I installed Nero 7.1 again and
the messages resumed.

Address Book failed to load. Outlook Express is
incorrectly configured, please re-install

See Microsoft Knowledge Base article...

That does the trick! To summarize, I
- uninstalled cumulative security update 911567; rebooted
- copied the corrupted Address Book to another location
- deleted all wab files in the Address Book folder
- opened OE, which automatically created a new, empty Address Book
- imported the address from the (corrupted) backup copy
- everything loaded and looks fine!
- closed OE

I then...
- installed cumulative security update 911567 again; rebooted
- verified that the new Address Book with the imported (recovered )
addresses works. It does!

- Set WindowsAutomaticUpdates=False? -)
