My laptop keeps freezing. I don't know what's wrong. I
tried defragmenting and cleaning up the disk space and
still I encounter tons of problems with Windows. At first,
it was just the print spooler acting up, I still can't
print anything. It keeps telling me it needs to close and
that I can't add a new printer. Then I can't copy files
through the CD-ROM. Sometimes, it won't even shut down
properly, it'll restart and when I try to select a user, it
starts making this sound and it freezes. And it takes
forever to start up sometimes. Somebody help me, or at
least point me to the right direction because I don't even
know where to start!

Try keeping it cool.Run a desk fan on it and see if that
helps, just might be getting hot. Then try the basic
stuff, like virus check, Spybot, and if it still makes
funny sounds I would think about backing up important
files....Good luck.

If a trojan is found then this will help. Following

Trojans are stealthy and not always found by anti-virus
software. If you find suspicious processes running or task
manager or regedit is being killed after opening, you
might want to try one of the following tools to check for
trojans (after scanning with at least two anti-virus tools
to get rid of the easy stuff).

DiamondCS TDS-3 - Trojan Defence Suite (TDS), leading anti-
trojan system for Windows: http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/

If you find that the problem was a
virus/trojan/spyware/etc. then you have to make sure it
doesn't happen again.

If you aren't already behind a firewall then activate the
one that comes with XP or download Zone Alarm (my
choice). The basic version is free. Run Google and
search 'Zone Alarm' (without the quotation marks).

Have a good anti-virus program - update and run weekly.
Keep its auto-protect feature ON.

Get Ad-Aware and Spybot - you can find them via Google.
Update and use both daily.

Great idea,i would run those scan. I am no professional.
But i have noticed that when i install Windows XP,
someonetimes i have to do it twice to make sure
everything has been installed correctly. That is an
option you could take. Also with the spool problem with
the printer: Is that printer using Serial or USB. With my
older computer it used to have the same problem. That was
becuase it did not have enough RAM thus could not prink
complicated/large files or folders.

Also what was the last thing you have installed? Could
that be hogging RAM making it slow? Try restarting in
safe mode and uninstalling the last program you
installed. Unless you installed it ages ago, and it
worked after the installtion.

Don't feel like your over your head mate, take it slow,
follow these steps to make sure everything is in order.
But do not reinstall windows XP again till last, and that
you have made sure that it has nothing to do with your
hardware etc.

Also have you touched or changed the registy?

Hope this helps
