Some VPN problems with SQL and Outlook

My operating system at home is Windows XP Home edition and
I just set up a VPN connection to my lan at work, which
goes through a firewall. I used VPN software provided by
work. I can get connected great, can run FTP and a
Mainframe emulator with no problem, but if I try to access
any SQL server on the lan, I can connect, but I can't open
any databases, or go into anything else...it just hangs up
or it says my connection has expired. If I try to go into
Outlook mail, it takes several minutes to download data
from the mail server for some reason or another instead of
just opening the mail list right up.
I use a VERIZON DSL line to connect to internet first
before I connect using the VPN. The lan personnel at work
could not figure out why I was losing the connection.
Basically they said I could receive packets, but could not
send them. Their best solution was to switch to Windows XP
Professional.
Do I really need to switch to a new operating system? Or
is there a better solution?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks!!!

I have folks that use XP home edition without a problem for Outlook so it
shouldn't be that. What type of VPN solution are they using? As far as the
SQL stuff, it could be as easy as changing the timeout period for the server
management tools (Enterprise Manager, Query Analyzer, etc). We have an off
site SQL server we manage and ran into the same issue.
