some video works in PP 2000 - some doesn't

I have read thru the threads here and checked out the tutorial at sonia... I can't even seem to find the "multimedia" that is meant to be listed under the windows components when I check add/remove programs. I am running PP2000 on Windows XP.

A few weeks ago I was able to easily import video clips into PowerPoint and they worked perfectly. I had originally captured them in Windows Movie Maker as I did not have Premiere installed on my laptop. I now do and cannot get files that were imported via Premiere to work in PowerPoint - all I get is either nothing at all or a white box with the file name listed. I really don't want to have recapture the same footage in Movie Maker that I have already captured in Premiere. Premiere files are avi so should work, yes?

Can anyone help me? I am a brand new Power Point user and the last project (including successful video) was my first ever attempt at using the project. My new project is exactly the same set up just with different video clips!

What codec did you use when you rendered the AVI in Premiere? The tutorial
at Sonia's site lists common codecs -- you might check to make sure that one
of those is what you used.

Ooops. I have gone back to the tutorial and tried to run mplayer.exe from the start -> run screen. I get an error saying that windows cannot find it. So this appears to be at least one problem...though I still don't understand why it worked before. Other than adding Premiere and changing my scratch disk to NTFS instead of FAT32 I have not changed my system.

In my control panel I do not have a multimedia icon. I do have a Sounds & Audio Devices

When I click Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components comes up along the left hand side - there is nothing for Windows Components listed in the main box. When I click Add/Remove Windows Components there is no "mulitmedia" option listed at all. I have checked the details of all components and cannot find it. HELP!

Try mplay32.exe since you're on WindowsXP.

But if the MCI Media player really is missing, I don't know exactly how
you'd replace it.

If mplay32.exe doesn't work, since you're on WinXP, you might see if you
have a system restore point so you can roll your system back to what it was
before you installed Premiere. Then try mplay32.exe and see if it works. If
it does, then reinstall Premiere, but use a custom install and don't let it
replace Windows video handling stuff.

OK...mplay32 does work - at least it comes up on the screen just fine

I don't know how to check my codecs - as in my other post, I can't seem to find the file that is talked about on the web site

In Windows 9x and ME, you could view the codecs installed on your system
through the Multimedia applet in the Control Panel. Windows XP no longer
contains that applet. To view the codecs installed on your system in
Windows XP, use AVICodec or GSpot - both are freeware.

Hmmm...no, mplay32 does not work with the clips saved via Premiere.

I get three errors..
video not available. cannot find "vidss:dvsd" decompressor - when I try to play a file that has been downloaded from my DV camcorder into Premiere. This same file was used to create a project in Premiere and saved flawlessly directly to DVD from Premiere

no driver is installed - when I try to play a file that was downloaded from my DV camcorder into Premiere and NOT used in a project yet, simply saved to hd. Cannot determine the device type from the given filename extension - when I try to play a Premiere Projec

Since you are rendering the movies from Premiere, you can export to a
PowerPoint friendly movie format.

Try saving the files as MPEGs (MPEG I) from Premiere.

If you need hi-res DVD quality video, you might want to save them as
compressed WMVs from within Premiere since MPEG II (regular DVD quality
video) is not too friendly with PowerPoint.

Also, your error message about "vidss:dvsd" means that you are missing a
codec.

You might also want to look at upgrading to PowerPoint 2003 since that's the
version that can interact with Windows Media Player - it also plays
fullscreen videos. You can order a 30-day free trial of PowerPoint 2003

Try here (and in general, you can often find info quickly by using Google to search
for the *exact* text of the error message. Watch out for linewrap:

I don't know what's in a Premiere project file; similar programs don't store the
media in a project file, just a list of the elements that make up the project, and
usually in a format readable only by the program itself. PowerPoint doesn't
understand these, just the movie and sound files that might be included.

I have now upgraded to 2003 version

Now I can seemingly import the video clip. BUT, It shows the first frame on the slide in PowerPoint and then nothing happens. When I click it it goes to a black screen (in the middle of a white one). I have checked the properties of what is supposed to happen on a mouse click (play). I have tried telling it to run automatically and also tried telling it to run when clicked after I import it. I am trying to View in Slide Show F5 mode.

It comes up on the screen and plays as it should? In that case, it should
also play in PPT.

There are a couple of things to try at this point. In order, try the
following. If one doesn't work, move on to the next one.

1. Try changing your hardware acceleration. Instrux at http://www.pptfaq.com
(put hardware acceleration in the searchbox there. You want FAQ 129 from the
search results.)

2. Try putting your presentation and your AVI on your C drive and then try
inserting the AVI into the presentation. This is a test to see if the path
length is the problem. Don't put the files on the desktop or anywhere
else -- just put both on the C drive. (Well, you can put them in a folder
called Test if you want -- C:\Test )

3. Make sure you have the latest version of Direct X installed.
I don't know how to check my codecs - as in my other post, I can't seem to

Since the file plays in mplay32.exe, I doubt it's a codec issue. But I see
Geetesh has given you some info on that.

oops, the subject change caught me -- I didn't see these other posts.

Geetesh has given you good info on the errors you're seeing. The "cannot
find 'vidss:dvsd" decompressor" does point to a codec issue, so exporting
from Premiere to a more PPT-friendly format should help.
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm has good
info on more common formats and codecs.

I have similar problem. It worked for a while, and then stopped. My mpeg 2 file worked fine for a while, and it plays in media player, but now, in powerpoint, I get a white screen. Have you figured out how to solve this?
