some services no longer run since windows update (KB921883)

After I installed the windows update (KB921883) on my home PCs several key
services no longer start even though they are set to automatic. The end
result is that I have no windows workgroup shares, no ability to connect to
other PCs, and no sound from the sound card.

System Info: IBM Thinkcenter 8150 desktop running Windows XP Pro, SP2.
Plenty of memory and space.

Any ideas what is the cause or suggestions how to resolve will be greatly
appreciated.
 
I have not experienced that problem and you also may want to post in the
Windowsupdate newsgroup. The notes for that KB say that the threat is
mitigated by a firewall. So assuming a firewall protects your network you
could try uninstalling that security update using Control Panel/add and
remove programs being sure to select that updates are shown. If that does
not help after a reboot you could then try doing a System Restore to a point
in time before that update was installed which will be shown when you see
your updates in Add and Remove Programs. Check with the Windowsupdate
newsgroup and you may be able to receive free support for a problem directly
related to a security update.

-Likewise been doing some tests on the two recent server-process patches,
and not seen any serious probs. The patches actually only replace two files,
netapi32.dll and srv.sys. Among others a patched win2000 server has been
thoroughly put through its paces, and is fine.

I think the notion that the threat is mitigated by a firewall would only be
true if no untrusted computers were EVER connected to your cabling (or
Wireless) - an infected machine on the LAN would still be a danger to an
unpatched computer, even if the infected computer has no logon credentials.
