| First of all I tried SP2 without solutions to problems.
|
| 1. Reboots periodically - usually with a c5 error. Bought new
| RAM(twice) updated IDE driver, DVD writer driver, current audio driver
| did not help, updated to current video driver. Tried driver verifier,
| ran scandisk, defrage, recreated partition/reformatted/reinstalled.
| I do not get a BSOD upon reboot, I have to check the event viewer.
| How can I enable the BSOD to possibly get a "wording" of problem?
|
| 2. Reboots normally occur when downloading something. Updated modem
| driver, checked connections, reinstalled modem (Surfboard 5100).
| Installed another NIC to network with laptop then disabled it. Even
| though disabled could it interfere in any way?
|
| 3. Is there a way to narrow down if/which driver is causing problem
| which is in accordance with diagnosis of c5 error?
|
| 4. Last resort is flashing BIOS even though the manfacturer's website
| doesn't list my problems in the "what update will fix" list. If I do
| decide to take the plunge can I use a CD instead of a floppy which I
| don't have installed on this computer?
|
| BTW:
|
| P-IV 2.4GhZ
| 512 MB DDR 2700
| Pair of Maxtor HDD (120GB/40GB)
| ASUShi_ P4S8X MoBo
|
| I've read loads of info at forums, Google, MVP websites, MS site and
| newsgroups but no luck yet. Normally I would park the machine but
| cannot afford another one for awhile. Thanks for any help.

start > control panel > sytem > advanced tab > start up and recovery
'settings' > then UNTICK automatically restart .... that should let you see
whats going on when it reboots.

ive got a feeling this is going to be ndis.sys file thats causing you
problems ..... thats gonna be your network card, you say you changed it, did
you change it for the same type, if so then try a totally different type

i had a similar problem for over 2 years, eventually tracked it down to an
incompatable NIC (netgear fa113 i think) changed it out for a realtek and
ints never done it since

can you use USB connection ??? thats eventually how i sused it out, i
swapped over to USB for a while and it was fine, then changed the NIC and it
was still fine, went back to old nic and it crashed within 20 mins

Thanks Dave. I ran the verifier to verify all drivers but the info
just showed all drivers loaded with the exception of the audio
driver I disabled. I looked at the link and it began to go too
much over the top for me. I could try the process of elimination
technique since I don't have a ton of apps installed. I already
uninstalled my CDROM which has not made a difference.
Thanks for your time.

Thanks sandman 112. I'll untick the auto restart.

My mobo had an onboard realtek. I disabled it and bought a linksys. I
also bought a cheaper realtek to hook up the notebook.

I used the USB connection for awhile and frankly don't remember if I
had the same problems. I guess I'll try that again. I appreciate the
help.
