I am unsure what happened. I travel for a living and my wife is computer
illiterate. Upon returning home from a long trip I find my Windows XP Home
software has most of it's internet setup menus (internet options, security
center) displaying in an unknown language. Does anyone know what might have
caused this and the fix to it? I have run multiple antivirus and spyware
programs and found nothing.

Search for mfc42loc.dll
If found, delete and restart the computer. Do NOT remove mfc42.dll

Installing a program that comes in multiple languages sometimes adds the
mfc42loc.dll file. One of the side effects of this file being implemented
incorrectly is wrong language in menus and dialog screens. Deleting the
file (it is not a native XP file) rectifies the problem.

Sharon F,

Thank you for the quick posting. Unfortunately, I was unable to locate the
..dll you mentioned in any search. If you think of anything else it will be
greatly appreciated.

Locate the file xpsp2res.dll in the Windows\System32 folder. Right-click xpsp2res.dll and choose Properties. In the Version tab, click "Language".

Which language is it?

Ramesh,

The xpsp22res.dll language is listed as "Slovak". How do you change this to
"English"? By the way, thanks!!

Petes222,

That's the root cause. Did you install any language pack recently? And when was the problem first seen?

As I stated I travel a lot, so I am unsure when this actually happened. I
tend to use my laptop for everything and the wife and kids use the desktop
(where the problem is). Anyways, I was able to stop the process using
xpsp2res.dll and replace it with an english version. Everything seems to be
running smoothly now. I have checked a few of the areas that were appearing
in Slovak and they are now appearing in English. Thanks again, I really
appreciate this.

As a fellow computer user, I am happy for OP that he got his computer
language problems resolved. As a linguist, I feel a stab of pain at the
lost opportunity -- OP, this would have been a perfect time to learn Slovak!
