Hello, hoping someone might be able to help me out here. Thanks in advance
to anyone who replies. I currently have the "semblence" of a small home
network set up. Basically, its 3 computers....2 running XP and one running
XP Pro, wireless off of a Belkin router. Each computer is protected by ZA
and virus protection as well as the standard ad-spy-mal ware protection. But
there are some things I would like to be able to do that I currently cannot.

1. I want to be able to protect the signal from being accessed from outside,
I can see where others are accessing my signal already and would like to put
an end to it.

2. I would like to be able to access each computer, files, folders.etc from
any of the other computers.

3. I would like to be able to send print project from one of two printers to
the computer that has my printer connected to it.

4. Would like to set up a fourth laptop I have to be used simply as a
server, containing specific software to be accessed by the other three
computers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
J

In response to your first question, the most secure way for wireless
connections to the router is Mac Address filtering. This is where each Mac
address of each computer is added to the log on the router and only these
are allowed to connect. Use Start>run>cmd>Ipconfig to find the mac address
of the network card of each computer. As you can see the only drawback is
if any other computers want to access your network (you or your friends),
their mac address has to be added to the log in the router. But it only
needs to be added once.
Hope this helps.

That might not be true. Sniffing and spoofing valid MAC adresses is an
easy thing to do. So filtering doesn't really protect anything. The only
real protecting is encryption

Security is handled within your router. I would use WEP and just keep
the list of keys handy for friends or family that might stop by.

Not the "most secure" but reasonably simple to do.

Neil,
I am just starting to learn how to do this stuff and am basicaly an
illiterite moron so please forgive this question.
I read your reply and ran the ipconfig command to find out my mac address,
but it wasn't given. This is what showed up:

Ether adaptor wireless network connection:
Connection-Specifit DNS suffix:
IP Address: 192.168.0.101
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.168.0.1

Is there a switch somewhere that reveals the mac address or is one of the
above the mac address?
Should there be something in the dns line? It was empty.
thanks,
mike
