Hi all, we have three Windows XP Home computers (two laptops and a
desktop) on a home network wth a Netgear wireless router. All three
can do tcp/ip to the outside Internet just fine.
The problem we're having is with Windows networking between the three.
-- On laptop #1, if in Windows Explorer I go to My Network Places >
Entire Network > Mshome, I can see laptop #2 and the desktop PC. If I
double-click on laptop #2, I can see shared files, etc. However, if I
double-click on the desktop PC, I get an error "//desktop-pc is not
accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource."
-- On laptop #2, one time when I attempt to connect to either other
computer I get an error "Mshome is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource." Other times, I see both the
desktop PC and laptop #1, but cannot get to shared files on either one.
-- On the desktop PC, on one try it can access laptop #2 and shared
files on it, but it cannot see laptop #1 on the network. On another
try, the desktop PC can now see laptop #1, but cannot access shared
files/directories on it. Later, the desktop PC can no longer see
laptop #1, even though all three computers have been on throughout
these tests. At one point when I enter laptop #1's name on the desktop
PC, it comes back with an error "Windows requires a share to publish
to."
I do know that all these PCs have shared directories on them, and all
three have remained turned-on through all the tests.
Laptop #1 and the desktop PC have Sygate Personal Firewall installed,
but disabling them doesn't seem to help.
If you all have any thoughts on how to resolve this I'd be much
obliged!
