I saw a post here and lost it that kind of sounds like my
problem, however that person was not using the OS I am
using, Windows98se.
I enter a lot of contests on line and 6 months ago had a
spyware/malware problem. Cleared that problem up with
Adaware and Spy Sweeper. Now, out of 190 contest pages,
about 12 won't load, I get a:
The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The
Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or
you may need to adjust your browser settings.

I've adjusted all of the brower settings, I can't even
pull up the rules page which is all text, yet other people
have told me they can access these sites.

I read hear something about "badly removing malware" by
Adaware and I wonder if I did something like that,
disturbed some *.dll files, if I recall that post
correctly. The answer to that post directed the person to
go to another site for a free program to correct this
error due to a poorly removed malware program. I cant
find it now, but RECALL that it wasn't for Windows98. Is
there a program like this for Windows98?

Sometimes malware disturbs the winsock.dll program, but that would break
your entire Internet connection, not just 12 of 190 sites. More likely there
are entries in a hosts file. For Windows 98se I expect that would be in the
same location as for Windows Me: C:\WINDOWS. There is no extension to the
file name. Unless you went out of your way to set one up, it should not
exist. A default Windows installation does not need it, so none is created.
You may find a "hosts.sam" file, but that one is not functional, being a
sample file. The functional file is just plain, "hosts". It is intended to
provide a match between IP address and Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN);
e.g., "www.blue-wine.com". If you have one, you may need to edit, or even
eliminate it. If you have one, post the contents; unless the file exceeds
about ten or twelve lines, in which case post ten or twelve lines as a
sample.

Not being able to reach some sites indicates a possible DNS issue, or the
hosts file has entries like, "127.0.0.1 <target site name>". If the
latter, your browser is trying to pull the site from "localhost"; your own
compute!

I have Windows xp and I recently downloaded service pack 2 and now I cant get
onto secure sites like my church memebers page. I get the same message as
teh first thread. How can I fix this?
