some icons disappeared from the desktop

After a HD crash and installing a new HD I re-installed Windows XP home
and all seemed to work fine, but after some time some icons disappeared
from the desktop and I can't put new ones. Any suggestions?
 
If they were the default desktop icons, there is a button to reset those.
start/run, type,
desk.cpl
Desktop tab, "Customize Desktop" button

Others will be shortcuts in the desktop folder of your %userprofile% folder.
