All was fine while running Win98SE but now....
Since installing XP Pro on my laptop, I have noticed using IE6 my website
does not correctly show some hyperlink buttons which are used to 'click on'
to launch another page. It just shows an empty box with a red cross in the
top left hand ie place holder. The button is otherwise dead!

Funny thing is, www site works faultlessly when accessed by my PC also
running XP Pro and IE6.

So I surmise it's got to be XP pro.

Any ideas?

This could be any number of things -- need more info.

What are the "buttons" comprised of...
Javascript rollovers?
Java?
Flash?
CSS?
something else?

www.in-depthsystems.co.uk

The source shows that those images are all loaded by relative reference.
The Privacy Report (Alt-V,v) shows that somehow they all come from:
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/indepthsystems/

(I guess it was inherited somehow from the frameset.)

If you can't access that site it would explain your Red-X symptom.

FWIW here's what my nslookup shows for that server's address:

<extract>
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: myweb.tiscali.co.uk
Address: 212.74.114.59
</extract>

BTW accessing it that way would eliminate the frameset from the problem.

those are Java.

I didn't notice that. But I didn't look for it because the problem symptom
claimed was Red-X. Wouldn't problems with Java fphover.class
show up as placement icons? (same shape but triangle, circle, square
instead of Red-X)
