I'm getting SOME blank boxes with an 'x' in the top left hand corner on some
sites showing up. An example is http://www.itv-f1.com/ where the box under
F1 RACING mag ad doesn't show.

Also, on some sites, I get empty boxes with a little Java symbol in the top
left hand corner. I have tried installing and uninstalling Java to no avail.

Any ideas?

Maybe that you are on a secure site and the reources will
not download over ssl - there is a hot fix available form
microsoft that may cure - but you will need to phone them
it is not availabale via windows update or included in
service pack 1 for ie.

Don't think so. Try the site I mentioned and tell me if you get a couple of
boxes with an 'x' in the top LH corner.

This is known problem with IE; it does not occur in Opera.

from: http://www.mywebattack.com/a/bboard/viewtopic.php?t=53

For the last couple months, I have had a problem with IE, that I have not been
able to fix to this date. Whenever I have some spare time, I play with it, than
toss it aside again... I know of several others, that have a similar problem,
and there are also various post in newsgroups.
It apparently is related to IE6 SP1 and causes a certain type of image to "not
show" on a page once it initially loads.
It only happens with small images, I think, but not sure especially when they
are transparent, small size GIF files, that show multiple times on the same
page. They will display a RED X instead of the image. When you right-click and
select "show image", the image will show just fine. The next time, you view the
same page, the images may or may not load, it appears to happen at random, and
more frequently on some of the pages.

The problem is NOT related to having images turned off, it is NOT related to
Symantec products and it is NOT fixable with any of the suggestions I've come
across so far.

There are rumors that replacing the mlang.dll would apparently fix it (at least
temporarily), however it involves cheating WFP and hex editing of a dll (under
Win2k SP3). That is the only thing I have not tried yet, but there is very
little feedback to confirm that it would even work

You can reproduce the problem at this URL
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/howtobuy/choosing.asp
The small checkmark images will not load initially if your IE browser has the
bug.

There is plenty of stuff posted on the web in regards to similar red x problems
- I have tried just about all the suggested fixes, none of them work, or have
worked for anyone I know.

If there is anyone out there that has had the problem, and was somehow able to
fix it, please let me know!
